2022 - Van Buren
Thank you to the Van Buren Neighborhood for being our 2022 Cities of Service Neighborhood!
A block party was held on Saturday, June 11 in Van Buren Park. Skyline Chili Hotdogs, sides, drinks, and door prizes were given out to residents who attended the event.
Make A Difference Day will be on Saturday, October 22, 2022.
9 am - noon
There will be 3 areas to volunteer on Make A Difference Day:
- Card & Placemat Creating - This will take place in the gymnasium of Christ Church United Methodist at 3440 Shroyer Rd, Kettering, OH 45429. Volunteers can create holiday greeting cards for active duty military serving around the world. Blue Star Mothers distributes these cards. Volunteers can also create holiday placemats that will be donated to local nursing homes. This is suitable for all such as individuals, groups, service clubs, sports teams, student groups, and faith-based organizations. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments and materials will be provided.
- Rain Garden Installation - This will take place at Van Buren Park at 1450 Scottsdale Dr, Kettering, OH 45420. Volunteers will help with the installation of a rain garden featuring an assortment of native trees, shrubs, and flowering pollinator plants. All tools will be provided including shovels and gloves, but volunteers are welcome to bring their own if preferred. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. Light refreshments will also be provided. This event will occur rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. Closed toe shoes are a must. Volunteers must be comfortable working on uneven, soft ground and working with shovels and wheelbarrows. Training will be provided. You must complete a liability waiver prior to helping.
- Community Clean-up - Volunteers will meet at Van Buren Park at 1450 Scottsdale Dr, Kettering, OH 45420. Teams will be assigned to different parts of the neighborhood based on requests. Volunteers will provide assistance to neighbors in need of help with yard maintenance and cleanup. This could include raking, light pruning, weeding, removal of brush, and litter. This project is in conjunction with the Cities of Service Initiative. All tools will be provided including rakes, hand pruners, loppers, eye protection, and gloves. Volunteers are welcome to bring their own if preferred. Light refreshments will be provided. Volunteers under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. This event will take place rain or shine, so please dress for the weather. Closed toe shoes are a must. Volunteers should be comfortable working on uneven, soft ground, and working with tools. Training will be provided.
