The City of Kettering, in collaboration with Montgomery County, Miami Township, Centerville, and Dayton, announces the launch of a spring sustainability initiative offering residents discounted rain barrels and backyard compost bins.
This regional partnership aims to promote environmental stewardship while providing practical benefits to homeowners. Rain barrels, which collect roof runoff, offer residents a sustainable water source for gardens and landscaping while reducing stormwater runoff, flooding, and erosion. Additionally, the program’s compost bins provide an efficient way to transform kitchen and yard waste into nutrient-rich soil amendments, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers and pesticides while decreasing methane emissions from landfills.
“This initiative represents a significant opportunity for residents to participate in environmental conservation while saving money on their water bills and garden supplies,” says Dawn Kirchner, Sustainability Manager at the City of Kettering. “By making these resources more accessible, we’re helping our community contribute to a more sustainable future.”
Residents can place orders online at www.rainbarrelprogram.org/mc through Sunday, May 4, 2025 (while supplies last). Item pickup is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2025, between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. at Miami Township Public Works, located at 10891 Wood Road, Miamisburg, OH 45342.
