Road Salts
Shovel snow before it turns into ice to limit the need for de-icing chemicals like rock salt. Shovel snow onto non-paved surfaces such as landscaping or grassy areas. As the snow melts, it will soak into the ground rather than the storm drain. Sand and sawdust can be used as an environmentally friendly alternative to salt products. Cracked corn as been suggested as well because animals can eat it before it gets washed into the streams. Either option increase the the life of most asphalt or concrete surfaces when compared to salts. After snowmelt, sweep up excess residues, including sand, to prevent it from washing into storm drains and streams. Using the old fashioned approach of a shovel means eliminating harmful chemical and adds the benefit of physical exercise.
