Snow & Ice Removal
Winter Weather Preparedness
The safety of our community is a top priority as we strive to provide safe and passable road surfaces during winter storm events.
The City of Kettering Streets Division plans for winter storms months ahead, even when the weather is warm! Organization and careful use of resources ensure safe driving routes.
Main Routes
The City of Kettering has 16 main snow routes established that provide a connected, continuous system, enabling traffic flow throughout the City. Main routes include major thoroughfares, hills, curves, emergency vehicle access, bus routes, and school access. When a winter storm hits, our crews will work around the clock to keep these routes clear.
While snow continues to fall, operations will focus on these main routes only.
Side Streets
After at least 2” of accumulation and the complete end of snowfall, the side streets in the city will receive attention. The length of time it takes for us to clear our side streets will depend on the amount of snow we receive, wind and air temperature.
How We Operate
Snow Route Priorities
The City of Kettering has established a route classification system to determine the priority and level of service for snow and ice control operations.
Priority 1
Thoroughfares and main routes that provide transportation for emergency service through and around the city and, that provide access to and from Kettering. Continued treatment may be necessary due to freezing roads and drifting snow. As conditions permit, these streets will be maintained to bare pavement.
Priority 2
Selected collector streets that run through neighborhoods to a thoroughfare; selected “hot spots” such as intersections, sharp curves and hills; school zones; and school or RTA bus routes. Additional treatment may be necessary due to freezing roads and drifting snow. As conditions permit, these streets will be maintained to bare pavement.
Priority 3
All remaining local streets and roadways within the districts. These streets will be treated and/or plowed as needed for drivability, but may not be plowed curb to curb or taken down to bare pavement.
Our goal is 30 hours after snow stops falling to have all roads treated and/or plowed.

Did You Know?
Our drivers clear an equivalent of 975 miles while plowing the city during a winter storm event. That's about the same distance as driving from Kettering to Orlando!
Tips for residents:
- Stay informed about pending weather conditions.
- Allow extra travel time and avoid peak traffic hours if possible.
- Maintain a safe following distance and slower speeds.
- Do not attempt to pass snowplow trucks, which may be plowing in teams.
